Selected student-journalists from different schools across Cagayan de Oro City, including representatives from OCGS The Witness, gathered for a day of learning, discussion, and collaboration at Xavier University Caveat Seminar-Workshop last June 5, 2026.

The seminar-workshop featured two speakers who are renowned individuals in their respective fields, one of whom was Ms. Wydia Angga, who focused solely on the safety of journalists. While many people often think that the biggest challenges journalists face are violence or censorship, Ms. Angga presented a different viewpoint. She stated that the greatest threat to journalism is fear itself. When a journalist lets fear stop them from reporting the truth, the world loses out on that truth. It was a simple yet powerful message that encouraged student journalists to reflect on the responsibility that comes with being a member of the press.
The seminar also explored the legal side of journalism through the discussion of Atty. Ernesto Neri. He discussed the concept of the "chilling effect" in relation to journalism, which is the suppression of free speech by individuals who may be fearful of being sued for defamation or facing other legal repercussions if they speak out or voice their opinion to others. Despite dealing with heavy legal topics, Atty. Neri made the discussion engaging and easy to follow. Following the discussion was an open forum. No question was too small or insignificant, and his answers often caused the audience to consider the issues from new and different perspectives than before.

Beyond the lectures, the seminar gave participants the chance to work with and learn from fellow student-journalists from different schools. Through reporting exercises, discussions, and collaborative activities, participants were able to share ideas freely and hear perspectives shaped by different experiences. The workshop created an open environment where everyone felt comfortable contributing, making the experience both productive and enjoyable.
The Xavier University Center for Legal Assistance, which hosted the seminar, kept it highly engaging through interactive activities and facilitating multiple opportunities for attendees to meet and connect with one another. Conversations sparked naturally among student journalists, creating an atmosphere of collaboration and mutual learning. Creative tokens were given to those who attended, leaving participants with memorable keepsakes from the event.
In retrospect, the XU Caveat Seminar-Workshop was not only characterized by the tremendous amount of knowledge provided by the speakers, but also by its ability to connect young journalists who share the same passion for storytelling and truth-telling. For the OCGS The Witness representatives, the experience served as a reminder that journalism is more than just writing articles or covering events. It is about asking questions, seeking understanding, and having the fortitude to speak when it matters.
