Pulse and Purpose: Equipping OCGS Students with Essential First Aid Skills

If a medical emergency happened right next to you in the hallway, would you know what to do? Grade 9-12 students at OCGS can officially affirm "yes" after an empowering, high-impact CPR Caravan led by  the Philippine Red Cross. This event, held on August 17, 2026 at the Multi-Purpose Hall, aimed to equip students’ with indispensable life-saving skills in an emergency–especially targeting cardiopulmonary predicaments.

The session utilized a dynamic learning model that combined formal lecture with interactive simulations. It opened with a comprehensive overview of emergency principles and appropriate courses of action in the face of sudden and unforeseen situations like an acute difficulty in breathing, syncope, or high-palpitation of blood. Following the insightful discussion, the students were organized into groups of 40 to participate in a hands-on activity that involved recreating and simulating the proper administration of CPR, using a water gallon as a training model.

During the simulation, students were instructed to first assess the individual for the absence of normal breathing or a pulse, subsequently perform CPR with continuous chest compressions until emergency responders arrived or signs of circulation returned. The final step was placing the individual in the recovery position once appropriate.

Following the discussion, the Philippine Red Cross taught the students the basic principles of pulmonary emergencies, including how to recognize and respond to sudden fainting, elevated heart rate, and difficulty breathing, before proceeding to the Heimlich maneuver. Students learned to perform appropriate abdominal or chest thrusts for both adults and infants. Nurse Malou Castañares remarked that mastering these essential safety maneuvers is crucial not only within the school setting but also in everyday situations where unexpected emergencies may arise.

As the session came to a close, its central message extended far beyond the techniques demonstrated or the fundamentals laid out: preparedness, collected composure, and unity can become indispensable in a moment of crisis. By equipping students with fundamental life-saving skills, the Philippine Red Cross emphasized that first-aid knowledge serves not merely as an academic lesson, but a practical responsibility that can empower regular students to respond when help is not readily available and needed most.
